The Key Role Of The 1936 Summer Olympic Games - 1635 Words

The Crucial Role of the 1936 Summer Olympic Games In May of 1931, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) selected Berlin, Germany as the site for the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, however, they did not know that in just two short years one of the most notorious, ruthless and supressive regimes, and it’s leader, ever known to man would be elected to lead Germany. The National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party was founded on February 24, 1920, in Munich, Germany. After suffering from a terrible humiliation and loss at the conclusion of World War One, the German people were hungry for change, wanted a sense of pride for being German, and a reason to have hope for the future, all of these things were exactly what the Nazi Party promised†¦show more content†¦When the IOC selected Berlin as the site for the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, they had no idea that in just a few short years Germany would be transformed from a humble, desperate state to a ruthless and power-hungry empire. The first part of German Society to undergo a transformation by the Nazi Party was the German government, which underwent a major change â€Å"on January 30, 1933, [when] the German President, Paul von Hindenburg, appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor, the head of the government.† (Bachrach 16). In order to gain power and stay in power, the Nazi Party needed to win over the hearts and minds of the German people; in order to do this, â€Å"Hitler and the Nazis promised [the] birth of a ‘New Germany,’ giving hope to many Germans fearful of the future.† (Bachrach 16). To accomplish their goal of giving birth to a â€Å"New Germany,† â€Å"the policies of the Nazi government were aimed at restoring Germany’s importance as a country, following its defeat in the First World War. When other countries and groups heard about the discrimination and mistreatment of Jews and other ethnic groups being committed by this new Nazi Party, they started to question whether or not the Olympic Games should still be held in

In all of the USAs history , poverty and homelessness are at an all time high. Within the rising poverty lives an 11 year old girl named Dasani who resides in the Auburn family residence homeless shelter in New York City. This shelter is for familys who can not provide the bare minimum provisions for themselves. Being homeless also means that the conditions of the place you live are healthy livable conditions. The room Dasani and her family live in at auburn, is barely livable at all. The walls are decaying into dust, there beds are all torn to shreds , they dont even have a bathroom, or a shower . A place like that does not sound like a home, or anyone for that matter, it is unfair and the conditions should improve in places like auburn. The root causes for Dasani and her familys homelessness , are her parents irresponsibility with money , and the unfairness of the system. Dasanis parents have never handled there money well at all, even now that they are homeless they still neglect to save any money that they make, in the little amounts they make it. They have been talked too multiple times about there irresponsible spending , but they still do not save money. Another root cause for there homelessness is the unfairness of the system, and the lack of opportunity for people in poverty stricken communities. There is not enough support for people without a job , or an education. The wealth distribution in NYC is completely unfair , and the system is designed to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. It is unfair that Dasani and her siblings are born in a place with no room for improvement. Some possible solutions for the problem of homelessness is better aid for people in need. They need

The Bubonic Plague Essays (595 words) - Plague, Epidemics

The Bubonic Plague The Bubonic plague ...................................................................................... The symptoms for the Bubonic Plague are in an order. First the heart beats wildly as it tries to pump blood through swollen tissues. Next your nervous system starts to collapse into itself, causing very great pain and bizarre movements of the arms and legs. Next, as death neared, your mouth would gap open and your skin would blacken from internal bleeding. The end usually would come around the fifth day. Other symptoms are high fever (between 101 and 105 degrees F), aching limbs and the vomiting of blood. In the beginning the blood is slimy and tinted. Then it becomes free-flowing and bright red. The most characteristic is the swelling of lymph nodes which also ads to the darkening of the skin. Some people even turn dark purple. Did you know that there is a cycle of the Bubonic Plague? This is how it goes. 1 Fleas drink rat blood that carries bacteria 2 Bacteria multiply in fleas gut 3 Gut clogged with bacteria 4 Flea bites a human and regurgitates blood into an open wound 5 Human is infected The Bubonic Plague was used for war too. People put diseased rats or flies in other peoples water. It was also used for something else. The dead bodies of the victims of the Plague were shot at their enemies by catapult in hopes that the disease would spread. About 850 years ago Physicians were pretty strange. They recommended holding a bouquet of sweet smelling herbs and flowers up to your nose to ward off the plague. Some say this practice was an inspiration for an old nursery rhyme. You might know it. Its called Ring a ring o roses. Back then it was a little different it went like this. Ring a ring o roses a pocket full of posies, atishoo, atishoo, we all fall down. Ring a ring of roses was said to be a rash that often signaled infection. A pocket full of posies were the flowers people carried to sweeten the air. Atishoo was the sound of a sneeze, a common symptom of the disease. We all fall down meant that all of its victims had died. Now for some death totals and dates. On October of 1347 the Bubonic Plague arrived in Sicily. Between February and May of 1349, 400 people a day died of the plague. In this same year over 50,000 Parisians died. Thats half of the Sicilys population! The plague has many preventive measures, such as sanitation, killing of rats, and prevention of the transport of rats in ships arriving from ports in which the disease is endemic, are effective in reducing the incidence of plague. Famine, which reduces resistance to the disease, results in a spread of the plague. Individuals who have contracted the disease are isolated, put to bed, and fed fluids and effortlessly digestible foods. Sedatives are used to reduce pain and quiet delirium. During World War II, scientists using sulfa drugs were able to produce cures of the plague; by and by, antibiotics, such as streptomycin and tetracyclines, were found to be more effective in controlling the disease. Antibiotics have proved successful in treating nearly all cases of plague. However, in 1997 scientists encountered an alarming exception a child in Madagascar who was infected with a strain of bubonic plague that was resistant to all the antibiotics normally used to fight this disease. The child recovered, but scientists fear that this strain of plague, if spread, could have serious public health consequences. Science Essays

Signature of Student GHz,Wang Date 201 3/119 DUE DATE RECEIVED DATE Individual essay Introduction: The global automobile industry had reached 1,640 billion dollars in 201 0, and the market value is forecasted to increase 49. 3% since 2010 to 2,449. 2 billion dollars in 201 5 (Marketing, 2011 Toyota, which takes up 6. 8% of global industry value, has just experienced its recall crisis from September 29th 2009 to January 27th 2010. More than 9 million cars and trucks around the world in the whole world were recalled by Toyota (Chris, P. Roger, W. , G. , 2010). Toyota was immersed in trough because of these faults and bad luck, and the public image is also seriously damaged. At present, Toyota is been returning on track gradually, and according to the report from Toyota Motor Sales, SACS, Inc. , its sales increased 17. 2% to 161 ,695 units in November 2012 because Toyota only sold 137,960 units in November of 2011 (Marketing 2012). These bad luck and breakdowns are very serious to any company which would encounter, so Toyota expressed its professional skills and abilities to handle these crises which are advanced in the automobile industry. New CEO of Toyota, Kaki Toyota, brought some improvements to companys operations and supply chain strategy. This critique will focus on three aspects of these changes, namely quality management, new product development and cost reduction, respectively, and in addition, some academic theories will be applied to explain these strategies Discussion: Quality management: The core competitive advantage of Toyota in the past was the high quality, and the main cause of the recall crisis was also quality problem. Nearly all firms pay much effort to quality improvement to achieve goals like cost deduction, higher customer satisfaction, more loyalty from customer, and better performance from financial and market aspects (Versa, R, Borer, K. K. , 2010). In general, costs of company are from internal failure costs, external failure costs, assurance costs and prevention costs. Quality control system reduces some costs such as internal costs but the accompanying results are higher assurance costs and prevention costs. In the wrong cost reduction program taken by Toyota, the less spend in assurance costs and prevention cost made Toyota move quality from the first principle replaced by outputs, aid by Kaki Toyota. Total quality management (TTS), six sigma and many other quality improvement approaches are depended on customer feedback (Paned, p. S. , Caving, R. R. , Neumann, R. P. , 2000), and the system taken by Toyota which called Toyota production system has the same characteristic. Another approach for quality improvement comes from employee feedback, In Toyota, quality circle (ICQ) and the concept of Kamikaze are required (Deeming,W. , 1970), and however, these essential operation elements have risk of gradually missing in the rapid expansion. In order to save the deteriorating profits brought by trade conflicts and the revaluation of yen, Toyota increased its overseas productions steadily. In the period between 2000 and 2009, overseas production of Toyota increased by more than 10 percent annually, higher than the increase of Honda and Ionians (Gang, 2010). As a result, it is difficult to implement tacit knowledge in abroad production bases to ensure quality control and efficiency in manufacturing. According to annual report in 201 0, CEO of Toyota, Kaki Toyota put forward some improvements in operation and supply chain strategy to improve laity management.. 1. Toyota establishes new quality assurance system in order to ensure security and safety based on the perspectives of customers. 2. Set up a Special Committee General Overview of Quality Issues for global quality (Figure 1 3. Some specific measures to improve quality and safety, which include three aspects: A) Strengthen the monitoring functions including better information gathering function, more technical offices, assisting root cause analysis by using Remote Communications Functions (RCA) and onboard event data recorders (DARED), better information analysis ND better safety decision-making process. B) Enhancing information disclosure to regain trust from customers C) Establishing five Customer First Training Center to develop Toasts human resource and maintain quality. New product development: New product development is also the soul of Toasts value network so Kaki Toyota enhanced and improved this process. New products may fail in the fierce competition, and this has been proved in many industries. However, the mass benefits brought by new products can always push enterprises to take this process, either the Toyota. Firstly, these new products are always the resources of competitive advantage, and if enterprises take the leading role in the emerging product categories the effects will be more obvious. In the automobile industry, new energy cars are the new development direction, and according to the report from Lei and Line (2011), Toyota will develop 10 kinds of cars in this field. Secondly, firms which develop new products will enhance their corporate image and Brand name. Further, Toyota wants to satisfy the needs from customers worldwide when provide clean and safe products, so Toyota put tremendous efforts to RD activities which are regarded to improve the quality of people (Toyota, 2012). With the help from outsides experts, Toyota regularly reviewed research issues like energy, information technology, materials to achieve the goal of efficient cost control (Toyota, 2010). Cost Reduction: The third aspect is the cost reduction which needs enterprises implement changes on both operation and logistic structure. Since the revaluation of the yen, adding the price rise of raw materials and human resource in Japan especially after the big earthquake in 2011. The cost of production in Japan as jumped dramatically, so Toyota pays more efforts to localization production to implement cost reduction (including maintain RD process quality with less expense) which can be analyzed from the annual reports from 2009 to 2012 (Figure 2). Conclusion: In Summary, by applying some strong improvements in quality management, Toyota recovers its quality crisis quickly and restores confidence from customer about automobile quality which was the core competitive advantage of Toyota. New products development helps Toyota improve its competitive ability and enhance its corporate image and brand name.

Environmental Determinism Definition

Environmental Determinism Definition Throughout the study of geography, there have been some different approaches to explaining the development of the worlds societies and cultures. One that received much prominence in geographic history but has declined in recent decades of academic study is environmental determinism. Environmental Determinism Environmental determinism is the belief that the environment, most notably its physical factors such as landforms and climate, determines the patterns of human culture and societal development. Environmental determinists believe that ecological, climatic, and geographical factors alone are responsible for human cultures and individual decisions. Also, social conditions have virtually no impact on cultural development. The main argument of environmental determinism states that an areas physical characteristics like climate have a substantial impact on the psychological outlook of its inhabitants. These different outlooks then spread throughout a population and help define the overall behavior and culture of a society. For instance, it was said that areas in the tropics were less developed than higher latitudes because the continuously warm weather there made it easier to survive and thus, people living there did not work as hard to ensure their survival. Another example of environmental determinism would be the theory that island nations have unique cultural traits solely because of their isolation from continental societies. Environmental Determinism and Early Geography Although environmental determinism is a relatively recent approach to formal geographic study, its origins go back to ancient times. Climatic factors, for example, were used by Strabo, Plato, and Aristotle to explain why the Greeks were so much more developed in the early ages than societies in hotter and colder climates. Additionally, Aristotle came up with his climate classification system to explain why people were limited to settlement in certain areas of the globe. Other early scholars also used environmental determinism to explain not only the culture of a society but the reasons behind the physical characteristics of a societys people. Al-Jahiz, a writer from East Africa, for instance, cited environmental factors as the origin of different skin colors. He believed that the darker skin of many Africans and various birds, mammals, and insects was a direct result of the prevalence of black basalt rocks on the Arabian Peninsula. Ibn Khaldun, an Arab sociologist, and scholar was officially known as one of the first environmental determinists. He lived from 1332 to 1406, during which time he wrote a complete world history and explained that the hot climate of Sub-Saharan Africa caused dark human skin. Environmental Determinism and Modern Geography Environmental determinism rose to its most prominent stage in modern geography beginning in the late 19th Century when it was revived by the German geographer Friedrich Rtzel and became the central theory in the discipline. Rtzels theory came about following Charles Darwins Origin of Species in 1859 and was heavily influenced by evolutionary biology and the impact a person’s environment has on their cultural evolution. Environmental determinism then became popular in the United States in the early 20th Century when Rtzel’s student, Ellen Churchill Semple, a professor at Clark University in Worchester, Massachusetts, introduced the theory there. Like Rtzel’s initial ideas, Semple’s were also influenced by evolutionary biology. Another one of Rtzel’s students, Ellsworth Huntington, also worked on expanding the theory around the same time as Semple. Huntingtons work though, led to a subset of environmental determinism, called climatic determinism in the early 1900s. His theory stated that the economic development in a country could be predicted based on its distance from the equator. He said temperate climates with short growing seasons stimulate achievement, economic growth, and efficiency. The ease of growing things in the tropics, on the other hand, hindered their advancement. The Decline of Environmental Determinism Despite its success in the early 1900s, environmental determinism’s popularity began to decline in the 1920s as its claims were often found to be wrong. Also, critics claimed it was racist and perpetuated imperialism. Carl Sauer, for instance, began his critiques in 1924 and said that environmental determinism led to premature generalizations about an area’s culture and did not allow for results based on direct observation or other research. As a result of his and others criticisms, geographers developed the theory of environmental possibilism to explain cultural development. Environmental possibilism was set forth by the French geographer Paul Vidal de la Blanche and stated that the environment sets limitations for cultural development, but it does not wholly define culture. Culture is instead defined by the opportunities and decisions that humans make in response to dealing with such limitations. By the 1950s, environmental determinism was almost entirely replaced in geography by environmental possibilism, effectively ending its prominence as the central theory in the discipline. Regardless of its decline, however, environmental determinism was an important component of geographic history as it initially represented an attempt by early geographers to explain the patterns they saw developing across the globe.

Misbeliefs about languages Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Misbeliefs about languages - Essay Example t in their language since the relational frame theory suggest that children naturally acquire their language through interaction with their own environment. â€Å"Skinner ( 1978 ) defined verbal behavior as any behavior on the speaker as reinforced through mediation of a listener who is trained by a verbal community so as to mediate such reinforcement† ( Hayes, et.al, 2001). Drawing from the post-skinner theories, it can be deducted that children learn through social interaction. Their own environment at home is enough to provide them with basic proficiency. For example, a toddler is usually taught by the parents to speak even baby words depending on the context of their culture. Later on, the parents are surprised by the ability of their children to speak some words that they haven’t taught. In fact, some homes are multi-lingual and children do not have a hard time acquiring a second or third language especially when it is frequently spoken at home. The second argument is that â€Å"the English language traces its ancestry back to Latin†. Again, this is a false statement since the roots of the English language is actually from Old English. History tells us that during the 5th century, the group of Anglo-Saxon settlers that invaded the eastern coast of Great Britain were the one s that brought this type of Old English. The modern English language cannot have its roots in Latin since it is considered a West Germanic language. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary cites the etymology of the word "English" which is actually derived from 12th century Old English  englisc  or  Engle, plural form  Angles. The English Club illustrates the historical development of the English language: These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into

Organizational Analysis Motivation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Organizational Analysis Motivation - Essay Example The jobs at FMC Green River are task oriented and are, to a large extent, defined by the union. Unlike FMC Aberdeen, the employees at Green River do not have well defined goals. Further, production at Green River is not directly linked to their pay or other organizational rewards. There is little chance of advancement and the union structure discourages any opportunity for promotion. The jobs at FMC Green River are very well defined by the union contract and workers are faced with fulfilling the needs, but have no control over the means of production. FMC Aberdeen is in a constant state of flux as employees are trained in a variety of tasks and are free to move from one job to another. The workers at FMC Green River have very little vertical job loading and their job description limits their horizontal loading. The FMC Aberdeen plant allows its workers to work outside their team and also function as team leaders. This type of organization offers many opportunities for career growth. The FMC Green River plant is structured by definition of tasks and employees have almost no chance of going beyond their current job or position. While the union may offer occasional retraining, it does not enhance the esteem of the employee. Performance reviews at Green River are not adequate to provide any performance or satisfaction impact on the employees. FMC Green River will encounter problems by trying to institute a rewards system based on performance. The workforce may see this as creating inequity and correcting this could have a negative effect on production. The workforce is currently the highest paid unit at FMC and they may respond better to other needs. According to the ERG theory of needs, relatedness and growth may be more likely to motivate the workforce. The jobs at FMC Green River have been structured according to scientific management. Racial Differences Essay -- Racism Personal Narrative Papers

Racial Differences "CHINK!!!! Yeah..that's right†¦look at us with those chinky eyes! Go back to where you belong!" Those words will forever ring in my ears. I was standing in line for lunch while talking to a friend while a couple of boys, fourth and fifth graders, were making fun of the only Asian girl in the school, me, a lonely kindergartener. I will never forget that moment when I realized that I was different. Growing up in a predominantly white community, I had never thought of the issue of race as a child. My neighbor and I were best friends, and I never thought of myself as different. She had blonde hair; I had black. She had blue eyes; I had dark brown. We loved to play with the same things, thus we were friends. It was that simple. But on that day in elementary school, my world came apart, and I will never forget it. I was different, and I didn't know why. After those boys said that to me, I just stared in shock and got my lunch. I acted as though they had said nothing, and I was probably fortunate, considering the horrible things young boys can do. But when I went home, I cried. Why were people making fun of me? I didn't even understand what "chink" meant. It was only the motion they made by stretching their eyes that made me understand. I hadn't realized that I was different from everyone else. At home I spoke Chinese and watched some Chinese movies, but I did not think that m ade me different. I was still a person, a human being. Did it matter that I spoke Chinese and had black hair and dark brown eyes? Apparently to some people it did matter. Every day I went to school with white children and went home to a Chinese family. For other people this was a line, a distinction that set me apart ... ...h group celebrates the stereotype that society has imposed on them, and instead of celebrating individuality; they celebrate the sameness of race. Living amongst white people I was initially teased because of my race, but I was more often liked and accepted for who I am. Living amongst Chinese people, I was initially accepted because of my race, but not liked for who I am. I am an American-born Chinese. These two sides make me. Without either one, I am not complete. When I walk down the street, I can never hide the fact that I am Chinese. I cannot change my Asian features. When I talk to people and voice my opinion, I am American. Yet I do not fit completely into both sides. I am different and proud to be so. Race does not define me; I define myself. I hope for the time when we stop focusing on race and can all embrace our differences and celebrate them.

Review Of Into The Wild By Jon Krakauer Essay

I just finished reading a book called Into the Wild. It is about a man named Chris McCandless who decides to give up all his possessions and money, abandon his family, and embark on a journey to live in the Alaskan wilderness where he is found dead. Jon Krakauer, the author, explains McCandless’s cause of death, starvation. However, he does not explain what persuaded him do all the extreme behaviors he did. Therefore, we will analyze the concept of a dysfunctional family and see how it led him to commit such actions and launch an odyssey to the wilderness. According to Texas Woman s University, family dysfunction is any circumstance that affects the normal functioning of a family. It continues to explain how dysfunctional families tend to hold on to a crisis and make its effect long-term (1). However, normal and healthy families tend to deal with the crisis as it happens, minimizing its effect on everyone and making it less damaging. Dysfunctional families can be affected by trauma or poor parenting skills (World of Psychology). One of the types of a dysfunctional family includes, that which is headed by an authoritarian figure (Disinherited). According to Kendra Cherry, an authoritarian parent usually has high expectations and demands but low responses to a child’s needs. She claims that authoritarian parents tend to impose rules without exposing the reason behind them and do not provide children with choices or options to express what they seek or declare theirShow MoreRelatedWhere Men Win Glory : The Odyssey Of Pat Tillman By Jon Krakauer2303 Words   |  10 PagesThe book I read was Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman by Jon Krakauer. Social Interactions The Inner Circle - 1203 Words

Everything you have seen, felt, tasted, smelled, and heard had shaped you into who you are right at this moment. Everything you will do and observe will do the same. Even as you are reading this essay you could be exposed to new ideas and concepts which could open your point of view, or shut them tighter, denying what you read. One is defined by their inner circle (family/friends), their community and conditions, and by their enemies and conflicts. The inner circle is the majority of one’s social interactions, especially at a young age, when they are the most impressionable, these social interactions are a quintessential part of forming their identity. Her complete lack of thought and emotion towards Grendel frustrates him, leaving him lost mentally, and forms his believe in mechanism. Since Grendel gets nothing from his mother, he goes to the dragon, who would be considered the friend side of the innercircle. Grendel sees the dragon almost as a mentor in that he comes to him for important advice he needs. Both Grendel and Freud’s theory of the id, ego, and superego show how much one’s family influences their identity. Another identity shaper is one’s community or conditions. This includes their outer circle and environment surrounding them. Plato’s â€Å"The Allegory of the Cave† is a wonderful tool to help explain the idea of one’s conditions and surrounding and how they shape their identity. In this scenario, the prisoners that were placed in infancy can only see shadows of people and objects casted from behind them. As plato said â€Å"To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images,† (Plato 1). We will write a custom essay sample on Technology Management Assignment or any similar topic only for you Order Now As such, without technology management, organizations cannot survive in the current business environment. Technology management has also been proven as a key component in the creation of wealth. Therefore, the management of technology, especially for technology intensive firms, is essential for their survival and to maintain their competitive advantage. Technology management is a multi-disciplinary field, which works as a bridge between engineering and business disciplines. The importance of technology management cannot be overlooked. In recent years, all leading developments in the global business environment are the result of the application of technology management (Khalil, 2000). Technology management is related to innovation (Mortar et al., 2009). In the current business and technological environment, corporations and SMEs must be able to adapt and evolve if they want to survive and expand their business. The ability and willingness to change is essential to survive in today’s highly competitive environment. As such, innovation has become an important aspect in the culture of an organization and is seen as a driving force in achieving growth (Trott, 2005). Innovation, in turn, is recognized as one of the results of efficient technology management. Technology management is a dynamic tool that can be utilized for various industries, both in the private and government sectors. The education sector is one of the areas where technological improvement is needed. This can be achieved through the use of online learning software and other related tools. Online learning communities are a growing feature in the landscape of educational technology. These tools and technology-oriented software are the key improvements in the education system and this has been proven with the passage of time (Herrington Oliver, 2000) This essay analyses Pakistan’s education market to find the gaps in the use of technology in the country’s education sector. To illustrate the importance of technology management, the essay also discusses its application in relation to the development of new software targeted for the education sector in Pakistan. The development of the new software is carried out with the guidance of an appropriate technology oriented-business model and business plan. This is done to minimize the risk and uncertainty involved in the product development process. Literature Review Benefits of Technology Management Looking at the economic history of the UK, technological management has been recognized as one of the key factors in the birth and development of the industrial sector during the nineteenth century (Trott, 2005). Since then, technology management has been an important aspect in economic and business growth. Technology management is recognized as an important element in business management. Firms have utilized technology management in their operations and have adapted it to suit their business needs (Pilkington Teichert, 2006). Many organizations are going through radical transformations due to technological changes that are happening on a global scale (Levin Barnard, 2008). In this scenario, technology management is seen as playing an important role in managing organizational change. Over the years, many authors have focused on how to manage technology resources (Cetindamar, Phaal Probert, 2009). Technology management involves processes to enhance performance and utilization of resources. It involves the acquisition and integration of existing knowledge into the creation of new knowledge. This is an important factor for an organization to survive in the current competitive environment. Every organization must have the flexibility to change and create new knowledge by adapting to the changes in the market. This will lead to higher performance and sustainable competitive advantage (Liu et al., 2006). Technology management is identified as a crucial factor for the long-term success and profitability of an organization. Technology is considered as one of the core assets that a firm relies on (Cockburn Henderson, 1998). Technology management enables an organization to utilize its resources in creative ways in order to enhance performance and increase profit margin and market share. The company can also acquire and manage resources with the help of technology management. Challenges in Technology Management One of the main difficulties in business is to manage uncertainty. This is the same challenge in technology and innovation management. New product innovation is a complex process. There are numerous factors and risks involved in innovation. The organization has to manage internal and external risks. Some of these are manageable while others are beyond their control. The management of the innovation process, which is a subset of technology management, involves trying to develop the creative potential of the organization. It involves the fostering of new ideas and generating creativity. Managing uncertainty is a central feature of managing the innovation process and managing technology (Trott, 2005). When there is new product innovation related to technology, the chances of uncertainty arises. Different experts have worked on these issues and have developed theories to avoid uncertainty or to create a better understanding of uncertainty, which occurs from new innovation. One of the theories in avoiding uncertainty is Pearson’s Uncertainty Map. This was developed after extensive analysis of different case studies of major technological innovations, including Pilkington’s float glass process, 3M’s Post-It Notes, and Sony’s Walkman (Pearson, 1991). Establishing something new is the essence of product innovation and this process necessarily involves risk. Therefore, early risk identification and management is required by innovative firms. Risk and uncertainty usually occur at the beginning of a new innovation process. It is important to note that innovation is not just about opening up new markets. Innovation can also present new ways of serving older and established markets. Technology Management and Innovation In today’s fast changing business world, innovation has become a fundamental component in organizations. The speed of innovation has changed the nature of global economic growth – made possible by the rapid evolution of technology, shorter product lifecycles, and a higher degree of new product development. Additionally, the availability of more knowledge to firms has made innovation even more complex (Du Plessis, 2007). You read "Technology Management Assignment" in category "Essay examples" From this perspective, innovation is undeniably a product of technology management. One of the primary roles of technology is as an enabler – it ‘encourages the constant need to evaluate, update, and employ changing job descriptions and business processes’ (Savino 2009, p.1). Technological advancements have significantly changed how businesses operate and how employees go about doing their work. The new paradigm in business organizations is the continuous demands for improvement and the acquisition of knowledge in a very dynamic and constantly evolving environment. The catalyst that enables constant improvement and innovation is technology (Savino 2009). As such, it is highly important to manage technology in the pursuit of innovation. Researchers have recognized that large multinational firms are one of the key drivers for the globalization of research and development (RD) and innovation activities. A study by Gerybadze Reger (1999) found that RD and innovation strategies have changed over the years. Since the mid-1990s, multinational corporations have been inclined to consolidate and streamline their operations. This shift in technology management strategy is due to the failures of distributed RD activities and globally-dispersed innovation processes, which have led to highly complicated and unmanageable organizational structures. Consequently, firms have opted for leaner and more effective types in managing the portfolio of innovation activities. Using Business Models for Product Innovation One of the ways to manage risk in new product innovation is to come up with an appropriate business model or business plan. A business model helps in making the innovation successful and avoiding the chances of failure, which is one of the risks of innovation. Although creating and implementing the business model for a small firm is not an easy process, many firms utilize this in order to minimize the chances of failure (Lindgren, 2011). Business models have been the focus of both the academic writers and practitioners. Creating a business model is now a part of the innovation process (Zott, Amit Massa, 2011). Researchers found that most firms have a variety of activities and corresponding business models. As such, a firm can use different business models to suit their various activities or a multi-business model approach can be used. Carrying out the perfect business model is not an easy task especially for the SME’s because they have limited resources; lack knowledge about the business; and have few business tools to support their activities (Neffics, 2010). Developing a new software for Pakistan’s education sector There is an existing gap in the use of technology in Pakistan’s education sector. Although there are some online tools that are used to manage online data and news, the information is usually found and managed in university websites only. There are currently no private providers of online learning software in universities in Pakistan. The new ruling of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) requires all education institutes to set online databases. As such, universities need to develop online learning software to fulfill the requirements and facilitate their students into using these new tools. This represents a good opportunity for the development of e-learning software for use in universities and colleges in Pakistan. Our plan is to develop software similar to â€Å"Moodle† for use in universities. Industry and target market A few years ago, Pakistan had no framework for the use of technology in higher education. This meant that the country’s education standards and quality were not at par with the rest of world. Pakistan was unable to make any progress in the education sector until 1991. There were only 34 universities serving a population of over 100 million and from 1997 to 2002, only 10 private universities were added. However, the rapid growth of the education sector resulted in the establishment of 53 private institutions by 2004. There are currently more than 74 universities across the country (HEC, 2012). Product Description The software that will be offer to customers is similar to â€Å"Moodle,† which is the acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. Moodle is an open-source course management system (CMS) / learning management system (LMS) / virtual leaning environment (VLE). It is used as a tool for creating online dynamic websites for students (Moodle 2013). Recent surveys show that it is considered as one of best e-learning software used by educators and is used by several primary and secondary schools in the UK (The Guardian, 2008). The software is customizable and there will be some modifications depending upon the circumstances and requirements of the clients. Using Moodle, the teacher can upload data form anywhere and student can access it instantly (The Guardian, 2008). Our aim is to introduce Moodle and to customize the software according to the needs of the higher education system in Pakistan. The software will allow tutors to manage their courses according to their requirements and students will be able to access available data from anywhere. University administration will also be able to upload news, results, and other related information using this software. There are various benefits in the application of the e-learning software in Pakistani universities. These include increase in availability of information, quick feedback, and better communication. The Moodle e-learning system provides users with an online platform for communication and sharing of content, information, and news. Communication – is the basic function of the Moodle e-learning software. Professors can post any course-related announcement for students. Students can chat with other students in real time. Discussion threads can be created. Students and teachers can participate in the discussion. Content – is the second core function of the software Teachers can post lectures, articles, assignments and other related information. Teaching calendar of the year can be included. Teachers can post quizzes and exams and allow students to access them via the internet. Students can submit their assignments online. Business Model A business model serves as a guide to help businesses create, deliver, capture and exchange value (Trott, 2005). There are main four components of a business model. Source: Trott, 2005 Core Strategy Core strategy is the first component of business model. It describes how a firm competes with its competitors. The core strategy involves customizing the software according to the needs of the organization and to set an optimum cost. Initially, we are targeting one university only, which is the Bahira University Islamabad. Other education institutions will be approached later on. Mission Statement Our mission is to provide excellent technology services to universities in Pakistan at the best cost. Product Scope The e-learning software will be developed by focusing on the needs and requirements of the clients. E-learning software is popularly used in UK schools. Teachers and students have given positive feedback on the use of e-learning software. We are expecting the same positive response from Pakistan’s education sector. Our focus is to develop the software based on some key points. Ease of use is one of the main objectives of the e-learning software. The product is new so we will ensure that it is easy to use and manage so that our clients will not have difficulty in using it. We will also ensure administrative flexibility so that they can manage it according to their needs. Our aim is to provide maximum value and optimize institutional investments to help them reduce their overhead costs and manage their finances better. We will also develop the software so that it is easily upgraded in the future should the client require changes. Basis for Differentiation There is currently no e-learning software in Pakistan, which is customized for the education sector and has excellent communication and content features. Most universities in Pakistan are using their websites for announcement and other news but they do not have a comprehensive software similar to Moodle. Our core differentiation is that we offer a customizable, flexible and easy to use software for the education sector. Strategic Resources For the development of this software, we will hire the best software developer form Pakistan. The reasons for hiring the software developer from Pakistan are lower labor costs and familiarity with Pakistan’s education sector. This will help us to minimize our costs and be more efficient in our product development. Our strategic asset is our developers and our business plans. Technology Strategy The technology strategy is part the overall corporate strategy takes into consideration the components of the core strategy. In pharmaceutical firms and high tech equipment manufacturers, it is common for the technology strategy to be related to the corporate strategy. This concerns the management and use of technology for further expansion and development (Burgelman Doz, 2001). Our core strategy is to focus on innovation and excellent services for our clients. Our goal is also to build reliable and flexible software that is cost effective and sustainable. The product we offer is based on Moodle. Although Moodle is already available in the market, we will develop a new e-learning software based on the Moodle framework. This new e-learning software will be customized to suit Pakistan’s education sector. Our basic strategy is to understand the client’s requirements and create products that will address all their needs. The service strategy provides guidance on how to design, develop, and implement our service management plans. We will provide not only the software to our clients, but also services such as installation, customization, and post-sales support. We will also provide trainings to teachers and administrative staff on how to upload data and use communication tools. Trainings will also be provided for university students who will be using the e-learning software. Financial Strategy The financial strategy is an important component of any business plan. Initially, we are going to finance our business using our personal savings and from investments of our family and friends. Our initial capital investment is ?3,000 to ?5,000. For future expansion plans, we will loan from a bank or other financial institutions. Partnership Networks We are going to start with one project, through the help of a partnership with a small software firm. This will help to minimize our development costs. The partnership contract will be based on profit sharing. The reason for entering into a partnership is to allow us to offer our products to other universities in the future. It is my responsibility to secure the contract from the university. It is my task to find out the requirements and needs of the university and to negotiate with them in terms of cost and other pertinent issues. Customer Interface Our target market is the Pakistani education sector. The main reason for targeting this market is the lack of educational software in Pakistan. Initially our target is one university, which will be Bahria University Islamabad. The motive for choosing this organization is the fact that some of our colleagues have studied there and are very familiar with the university. According to students of Bahria University, the administrative system that their university is currently using is not user friendly compared to other well-known universities in the Pakistan. As such, it will be a great idea to offer the new e-learning software to this university. To get the contract for developing this service, we will talk to the university’s management team. We will present them our product’s features and offer our services to them. Pricing Model We are new in the market and we want to compete with existing players. Our main focus is to attract a lot of customers and this can be achieved by making our products affordable. We are applying a cost leadership strategy. We will offer the best products at low cost to persuade customers to avail of our products. This is an ideal market entry strategy. maximum customers and for this out for going for cost leadership strategy. We will offer best low cost to facilitate our clients and make them comfortable to deal with us. Initially our motive is to adjust our self on low profit and gain market share. Conclusions Success of an organization depends on leaning, innovation, and constant change in a systematic and scientific way. Every organization will constantly have to acquire new knowledge to remain competitive. Change and uncertainty is managed by having a plan for the future. With a business plan, uncertainty ceases to be a threat and becomes an opportunity. Different models must be used to avoid uncertainty and risk. In entering a new market, we will use a business model to avoid uncertainty and carry out the innovation process in a manageable way. Being management student, we admire the importance of literature on technology management and new product innovation. On the basis of that literature and examples, we can conclude that if we ignore all those theories and models, product innovation will not be achieved. Our plan is based on the review of relevant literature and carried out through a business model. References Burgelman, R.A. and Doz, Y.L. (2001). The Power of Strategic Integration. Importance of People Management in Organizations

Introduction People management in any business organization is a main factor in determining organization success. The smooth running of any business set up requires recruitment of a substantial number of employees. To ensure a constant flow of business, it is important to understand the workers and handle them properly.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Importance of People Management in Organizations specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Managers in any business organization have been given the responsibility to provide leadership, inspire, educate and give confidence to the employees (Bedeian 2003, p. 124). Other managerial responsibilities include employing, deploying, evaluating and giving instructions to the workers. However, such responsibilities are not easy to undertake. Performance management Managers use performance management to measure employees output. An organization is always deemed to benefit from emplo yees’ integrated efforts. Efficiency at the work place requires managers integrate all employee issues to establish a positive working environment with increased output. To be able to establish a good working environment, a manager is required to establish good reward policies and motivation for the workers. Managers use performance management as a strategy to provide a foundation of reward policies. In this respect, employees that perform in consistency with pre-determined goals are subjected to certain reward policies. The reward policy should focus on developing the attitudes of the employees (Baron 2003, p. 89). This will increase motivation for working among the employees. For example, the best performing workers ought to be rewarded at the end of a trading period. The workers’ welfare should motivate them into providing their best. Recruitment and selection Recruitment and selection of workers is a vigorous activity undertaken by the managers that require profess ional expertise. Competent workers will provide high quality work at minimal supervision. The implementation of policies and strategies is easier where the workers are competent (Higgins 2004, p. 167). During job interviews, identification of the best candidates is an acid test for the selection panel. The panel should prepare an interview sheet that will define the exact potential of the job seeker. Academic performance should not be perceived as a major element during the exercise. The job seekers general outlook and discipline is important. Therefore, the selection process and criteria should include the experience and the general knowledge of the job seeker in regard to the job position.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Training development acts as a foundation where personnel are aligned with an organizations job expectations and goals. In recent years, the concept of training development has been used to instill motivation among employees. The concept has been instrumental in providing employees with significant skills and knowledge on issues related to their profession. Training development has been used as one of the basic requirement acknowledged by the management before an employee is promoted. Difficulties and mistakes in reward policies and motivation strategies A good reward strategy should motivate the worker. The reward should be given after a good performance by the worker. The reward strategy should be done regularly to promote the commitment of the workers. There are managers have no procedure or policy on how rewards should be given to the performing employees. Moreover, some managers do not deem it important to engage other staff members in a making critical decision during th e employee reward process. A culture of competition for the reward among the workers will increase the output of the company. A psychological contract makes the workers feel they are part of the business. In some instances, managers make the mistake of not establishing a guiding and counseling unit to promote the employees’ psychological contract (Baron 2003, p. 89). The frontline staff in a business organization is the employees who work directly with the customers (Graban Swartz 2011, p. 176). The frontline staff represents the organization when they interact with customers. The information given by the frontline staff is important to create and maintain the image of the organization in the market. In this respect, some managers lack proper reward and motivation strategies to empower frontline staff members. Lack of proper support and a training development scheme hinders the effectiveness of frontline staff. Moreover, the frontline staff lacks proper motivation as a resul t of the same. Lack or proper orientation during staff recruitment process is considered to be a great mistake in employee rewarding and motivation. Orientation in the company should be accompanied by the training development. On the same note, some managers make the mistake of not conducting proper employee performance assessment after the training development. Sometimes, managers do not use customer satisfaction as a basis of motivated of frontline staff members (Graban Swartz 2011, p. 176).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Importance of People Management in Organizations specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Managers also forget to use the working environment as a method of analyzing the Frontline staff. A good working environment stimulates the worker motivation towards the job. Health hazards and risks are reduced when the environment is good. The confidence of the workers is important because it makes the work ers free to deliver the best services. Recruitment of workers depends on the environment in the organization (Graban Swartz 2011, p. 176). A poor business environment will develop a culture of losing the best workers. Managers should develop management strategies that are results oriented with the consideration of the workers. These strategies can be; a proper communication channel and a staff- friendly culture. The components of a positive work environment culture are; self-esteem, reliability and honesty (Deci 2001, p. 105). Core values are better understood by the workers where there exists a positive culture. As a result, the judgment of the workers towards the customers will be in line with the organization’s core values. It is a mistake not to include teamwork as a method of employee motivation. Teamwork provides the business organization with the use of talents from the workers (Deci 2001, p. 105). The workers should work and assist where they can provide the best qua lity. The culture of teamwork will reduce unnecessary competition among the workers and give the business a priority. When problems arise the managers should solve it quickly without bias. Employee management is sometimes faced with a number of difficulties. The reward strategy can be a cause of concern by the workers (Ferrar 2006, p.189). The method used to determine the best employee is not always supported by all workers. Some will insist that the winner does not deserve the reward. Training development is a problem because it depends on the willingness of the workers. Also, different people understand at different levels. Another problem associated with people management failure of constant consultation within the business set up. A regular consultation is an important conflict resolution mechanism. Lastly, policy implementation is difficult especially when it is implemented during a training period. Workers do not like changes, and it will be difficult to implement the changes (Bedeian 2003, p. 124).
